#6 – Jan Bosch, Why Europe Must Embrace the AI Software Revolution

I had an insightful discussion with Jan Bosch about digital transformation and the impact of AI on software development. Jan, who runs a research center with 15 companies and 5 universities, shared his perspective on how European companies need to adapt faster to compete globally. He highlighted how European businesses face challenges from regulatory pressure (250-300 different regulations) and a risk-averse culture that often holds back innovation.

We explored how AI is transforming software development, with Jan explaining how companies need to fundamentally rethink their processes from the top down rather than just implementing AI in a bottom-up fashion. He described how AI agents could work together to “grow” systems rather than build them traditionally, potentially enabling single-person companies to create significant value. However, he emphasized that humans will remain crucial in the process, acting as controllers and decision-makers while AI handles repetitive tasks.

The conversation concluded with a discussion about democratizing technology. Jan expressed concern about the concentration of new tech in a small number of companies and praised developments like DeepSeek that make AI more accessible. He advocated for faster deployment of technology and making it broadly available, arguing that society gets the most value from technology when it’s highly democratized.

Key Points and Podcast

00:00 Introduction

10:14 🎓 Jan’s background spans academia and industry, including professorships in Sweden and Netherlands, plus leadership roles at Nokia and Intuit, before returning to academia to help companies with digital transformation.

29:10 🤖 AI agents don’t have the same information processing constraints as humans, which means traditional software architecture and company processes need to be completely redesigned around AI capabilities rather than human limitations.

33:20 📝 Documentation and repetitive tasks in software development are prime candidates for AI automation, freeing up engineers to focus on more valuable creative work.

35:43 💰 While there are concerns about AI taking jobs, historically major technological transitions have led to new types of jobs being created rather than permanent unemployment.

36:28 🌐 The real value of technology comes when it’s highly democratized and available to everyone at low cost, not concentrated in just a few large companies.

38:04 🚀 Europe tends to be overly risk-averse and anti-technology, but people are underestimating how much value technology has brought to humankind – we should embrace technological advancement rather than fear it.
